La Tomatina is a festival held in Valencia city Bunol where participants throw tomatoes at each other. It is held the last Wednesday of August, during the week of festivities in Bunol.
About 10 AM, festivities begin with the first case of Tomatina. More trucks throwing tomatoes in abundance in the Plaza del Pueblo. The tomatoes come from Extremadura, where they are cheaper, and is grown especially for the holidays, is of poor taste. For participants, the use of safety goggles and gloves are recommended. The tomatoes must be crushed before being thrown to reduce the risk of injury.
Bunyol is a small village around 9000 people, where the population swells to about 30,000 on the day of La Tomatina. There is hardly any ac commodation in the village itself, so it is best to stay at a hostel in Valencia or take a look at some Valencia Hotels.
Make sure to take a change of clothes for the return train ride - there are some public showers Bunyol near river.
